Blue Virginia Blue

Blue Virginia Blue was released in 1986 on Rebel Records, a label deeply rooted in the bluegrass tradition. Bill Harrell, a veteran of the Washington, D.C. bluegrass scene who famously partnered with Don Reno for many years, led the Virginians during a period when the genre was navigating the intersection of traditional Appalachian sounds and a more polished, contemporary studio aesthetic. This record stands as a testament to Harrell’s enduring commitment to the classic bluegrass sound he helped define during the mid-20th century.

The album reflects the collaborative spirit typical of Harrell's later career, featuring seasoned musicians who prioritized tight vocal harmonies and instrumental precision. The artwork and production reflect the understated, straightforward approach favored by Rebel Records during the eighties, which aimed to document and preserve the work of established bluegrass masters. While it did not reach mainstream charts, the album was well-received by the bluegrass community as a faithful entry in Harrell’s expansive discography, maintaining the integrity of his long-standing artistic identity.
