Brancusi Sculpting Beyonce

Released in 2018 through the Italian label Hundebiss, Brancusi Sculpting Beyonce represents a pivotal moment in Lamin Fofana's exploration of Black studies, migration, and the intersection of electronic soundscapes with conceptual art. The work emerged from Fofana's deep engagement with the socio-political implications of the Middle Passage and contemporary Black identity, using the titular reference to the iconic sculptor Constantin Brâncuși and the cultural ubiquity of Beyoncé as a lens through which to examine themes of form, permanence, and cultural labor.

The album's design and sonic architecture reflect Fofana’s signature approach, characterized by layered, atmospheric synthesizers and field recordings that prioritize emotional weight over traditional rhythmic structures. By aligning these abstract sonic compositions with high-concept references, Fofana sought to challenge the listener's perception of historical memory and artistic canonization. Upon its release, the record was noted by critics for its meditative intensity and its ability to bridge the gap between experimental electronic music and sociopolitical commentary.
