Where it came from
Released in 2024 by the venerable Soul Jazz Records, this compilation serves as a curated retrospective of the foundational sounds that fueled the breakdancing explosion in New York City between 1970 and 1984. The label, known for its deep-dive archival projects, assembled this collection to document the specific rhythmic patterns and breakbeats that became the sonic infrastructure for the B-boy and B-girl subculture before the genre was fully commercialized.
The design of the release reflects the label's aesthetic commitment to historical context, utilizing archival photography and liner notes that connect the musical selections to the social climate of the South Bronx. Produced with an eye toward cultural preservation, the compilation focuses on the raw, percussive energy of early hip-hop and funk, emphasizing the tracks that were staples for street-level dancers. It was received as a definitive sonic companion to the history of competitive street dance.
