Where it came from
Released in 1984 on the independent Swedish label Ton Art, this record captures a specific moment in the Nordic folk and jazz-inflected music scene. The album serves as a collaborative showcase for vocalist Britt Ling alongside composer Stefan Forssén, whose arrangements were deeply rooted in the artistic experimentation prevalent in Gothenburg’s music circles during the early eighties. The production reflects a period of heightened interest in Swedish-language poetry set to contemporary music, prioritizing lyrical intimacy and structural innovation over commercial accessibility.
The design and composition of the album were heavily influenced by the collaborative spirit of the Ton Art collective, an organization known for its focus on Swedish improvisational music and avant-garde folk interpretations. By pairing Forssén’s idiosyncratic compositions with Ling’s distinct vocal delivery, the project sought to bridge the gap between traditional Swedish balladry and modern jazz sensibilities. Upon its release, the record was primarily distributed within niche cultural circles, gaining recognition primarily among enthusiasts of the Swedish progressive and experimental folk movements for its nuanced, atmospheric arrangement.
