Where it came from
The Carmen Suite was conceived in 1967 when composer Rodion Shchedrin reimagined Georges Bizet’s iconic opera for his wife, the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. Shchedrin opted for an instrumentation of strings and a vast array of percussion, stripping away the woodwinds and brass to create a lean, percussive soundscape that highlights the rhythmic intensity of the score. This adaptation was written specifically to showcase Plisetskaya's dramatic stage presence, breathing new life into Bizet's themes through a distinctly Soviet-era avant-garde lens.
This particular recording, released by the state label Melodiya in 1991, features the Moscow Virtuosi under the baton of Vladimir Spivakov. By this time, the suite had already cemented its status as a staple of the ballet repertoire, known for its bold, unconventional orchestration. The 1991 pressing represents a transitional period for Melodiya, capturing the ensemble's polished, high-energy interpretation during the final years of the Soviet Union's state-run recording industry.
