Carmen-Suite 1 / L'Arlésienne-Suiten 1&2

Released by Deutsche Grammophon in 1972, this recording features the Berliner Philharmoniker under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. The album pairs the orchestral suites from Bizet's opera Carmen with his incidental music for L'Arlésienne. This era of Karajan’s career was defined by his meticulous and polished approach to the romantic orchestral repertoire, seeking a lush, high-fidelity sound that took full advantage of the advanced recording techniques fostered by the label at the time.

The album reflects the distinctive house style of Deutsche Grammophon during the 1970s, characterized by the iconic yellow border design that unified the label's catalog. Karajan’s interpretation of these suites was widely received as a definitive recording, praised for its rhythmic precision and the sophisticated tonal quality of the Berlin Philharmonic. It remains a staple of the classical canon, valued by collectors for both the artistic merit of the performance and the high technical standards of the analog mastering process.
