Chefs D'oeuvre Grégoriens

Released in 1983 by the French label Editions Studio S.M., this recording showcases the liturgical music tradition of the Abbey of Ligugé. The abbey, located near Poitiers, holds a significant place in history as the oldest monastery in France, founded by Saint Martin of Tours in the 4th century. This release serves as both a devotional document and an effort to preserve the Gregorian chant tradition, which had seen significant shifts in musical practice following the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council.

The recording captures the Chœur des Moines de l’Abbaye de Ligugé as they interpret essential works of the Gregorian repertoire. Editions Studio S.M. was renowned for its commitment to documenting religious and monastic music, often prioritizing high-fidelity archival sound to capture the acoustic environment of the abbey's stone architecture. The design of the release reflects the minimalist, contemplative aesthetic typical of the label's mid-century religious catalog, intended to center the listener's focus entirely on the vocal performance rather than the commercial presentation of the disc.
