Where it came from
Released in 1978 by the French label Editions Studio S.M., this record serves as part of the label's extensive commitment to documenting and preserving traditional liturgical music. It captures performances by various monastic choirs, including those from the Abbayes of Ligugé, Timadeuc, and En-Calcat, all renowned for their dedication to the preservation of Gregorian chant within the Roman Catholic tradition.
The production reflects a post-Vatican II era where ecclesiastical institutions sought to formalize the recording of their repertoires to ensure the survival of centuries-old oral and manuscript traditions. The design and curation were overseen by the label's producers to highlight the solemnity of the Christmas season, presenting the music not as mere commercial product, but as a disciplined theological and aesthetic exercise in monophonic, unaccompanied prayer.
