Where it came from
Released by the state-owned Romanian label Electrecord in the 1970s, this recording captures the rich musical heritage of Transylvania during the Renaissance and early Baroque periods. The album serves as an academic and cultural initiative to document and preserve the compositions of significant regional figures such as Valentin Bakfark and Ion Căianu, who contributed significantly to the polyphonic and lute traditions of the era.
The recording features performances by the Formație de muzică veche under the direction of Ludovic Bàcs, a conductor noted for his dedication to early music ensembles in Romania. The production reflects the scholarly approach of the period, aiming to bring obscure 16th and 17th-century manuscripts to a modern audience. It was received as a valuable ethnomusicological resource, providing insight into the diverse cultural synthesis of Transylvanian court and liturgical music.
