Das Musikalische Opfer, or The Musical Offering, was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1747 following his visit to the court of Frederick the Great. The work consists of a series of canons and fugues based on a complex musical theme provided by the King himself, serving as a display of Bach's prowess in contrapuntal composition and speculative music theory. It remains one of the most intellectually rigorous achievements of the late Baroque period.
