Lore

Why it matters

This 1974 release on the Le Chant Du Monde label captures the oral traditions and folkloric soundscapes of the Aeolian Islands through Benito Merlino’s fieldwork. It is a significant document for ethnomusicology collectors, as it preserves the rare songs and narratives of a region that was rapidly modernizing and losing these specific cultural expressions during the mid-twentieth century.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1974 on the Le Chant Du Monde label, this album serves as a musical and narrative exploration of the Aeolian Islands, located off the northern coast of Sicily. Benito Merlino, a writer and researcher deeply invested in the folklore of the Mediterranean, curated this collection to preserve the oral traditions, myths, and social history of the archipelago. The project emerged during a period of heightened interest in ethnomusicology and regional folk heritage in Europe, aiming to document the intersection of history and legend through spoken word and traditional arrangements.

The album's design and thematic direction reflect the label's focus on authentic cultural documentation and historical storytelling. By compiling narratives involving deities, heroes, pirates, and emigrants, Merlino crafted a sonic tapestry that illustrates the shifting identity of the Aeolian people over centuries of isolation and external influence. Upon its release, it was regarded as a scholarly contribution to Italian folk archives, valued for its commitment to atmospheric storytelling rather than purely commercial appeal.
