Where it came from
Demixed was released in 1992 by the German experimental musician Holger Hiller through the Mute label. Emerging from the post-punk and Neue Deutsche Welle movements, Hiller was known for his idiosyncratic, collage-based approach to songwriting. This compilation served as a retrospective of his work, bringing together remixes and re-interpretations of tracks from his earlier solo career, reflecting the burgeoning interest in electronic experimentation and avant-garde pop production during the early nineties.
The album reflects Hiller’s meticulous, deconstructive approach to music, where disparate samples and synthesized sounds are woven into dense, rhythmic textures. The design and sound aesthetic were heavily influenced by the Mute label’s commitment to electronic innovation, prioritizing artistic integrity over mainstream commercial viability. Upon its release, the record was noted by critics for its intellectual rigor and its playful, subversive take on the remix culture that was then gaining significant traction in the alternative music scene.
