Dornröschen

Dornröschen, or The Sleeping Beauty, was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky between 1888 and 1889, marking the second of his three celebrated ballets. Commissioned by Ivan Vsevolozhsky, the director of the Imperial Theatres in St. Petersburg, the work was designed to push the boundaries of ballet music by incorporating a symphonic depth that was rarely seen in the genre at the time. Marius Petipa provided the detailed choreography instructions, which guided Tchaikovsky’s melodic and structural choices as he sought to capture the fairytale's magical and courtly atmosphere.
