Commissioned by the Russian Count Johann Georg von Browne and published in 1799, these three string trios represent the final installment of Beethoven's op. 9 set. They were composed during a period of transition as Beethoven began to move away from the influence of Haydn and Mozart, aiming to establish a more distinct and ambitious voice in chamber music. The pieces are considered some of the most sophisticated examples of the genre from the late eighteenth century, challenging the technical and expressive capabilities of the performers.

This 1976 recording was issued by the East German label ETERNA as part of their comprehensive documentation of classical repertoire performed by Eastern Bloc ensembles. The Suske-Quartett, led by violinist Karl Suske, was highly regarded for its precision and commitment to the Central European performance tradition. The inclusion of the string quartet arrangement of the Piano Sonata Op. 14, No. 1, highlights a common historical practice where composers or contemporaries adapted keyboard works for small ensembles to increase their accessibility and domestic utility.
