Commissioned by the Russian Count Johann Georg von Browne, Beethoven composed the three String Trios, Op. 9, between 1797 and 1798. At the time, Beethoven considered these works to be his finest chamber music, intended to showcase his mastery of the genre before he turned his focus to the string quartet. The inclusion of the arrangement of the Piano Sonata Op. 14, No. 1, for string quartet, which Beethoven himself arranged to expand the reach of his piano repertoire, adds a unique layer to this collection of early-period compositions.

This 1970 release features the Suske-Quartett, a highly regarded East German ensemble led by violinist Karl Suske. The recording captures the meticulous attention to structural clarity and stylistic nuance that characterized the quartet’s interpretation of the Viennese classical tradition. By pairing the technically rigorous Op. 9 trios with the rearranged sonata, the recording offers a comprehensive view of Beethoven's transitional period, highlighting his evolving approach to string textures and harmonic complexity.
