Where it came from
Released on the Fontana label, this compilation record captures the enduring Dutch fascination with the 'zeemanslied' or sailor song tradition. Produced during the mid-20th century when maritime folk music remained a staple of community entertainment in the Netherlands, the album serves as a nostalgic potpourri, gathering traditional sea shanties and nautical-themed performances under one collection to satisfy a domestic audience seeking comfort in familiar, sing-along melodies.
The album features a collaboration between De Twee Pinten, known for their lighthearted vocal style, alongside Stella Bos and Han Grevelt, all supported by an orchestra led by the prolific arranger Jack Bulterman. The design and arrangement reflect a professional approach to popular folk music of the era, aiming to provide a polished yet accessible listening experience that emphasizes the jaunty, rhythmic quality of the genre, which had been a popular fixture on Dutch radio and variety stages for decades.
