Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the East German state label AMIGA, this single captures the quintessential spirit of Thuringian folk music during the mid-20th century. Herbert Roth, a celebrated accordionist and composer, became a cultural icon for his dedication to the traditional sound of the Thuringian Forest, blending folk instrumentation with regional storytelling to preserve local heritage amidst the rapid modernization of the German Democratic Republic.

The production features the warm, ensemble-led arrangements characteristic of the Instrumentalgruppe Herbert Roth, with vocals by Waltraut Schulz. The songs were designed to evoke the imagery of rural winter life and traditional customs, a aesthetic that resonated deeply with East German audiences who sought comfort and nostalgia in their regional identity, solidifying the record's place as a staple of winter seasonal music in the region.
