El Códice De Las Huelgas (S. XII-XIV)

The Codex Las Huelgas is a medieval musical manuscript originating from the Cistercian monastery of Santa María la Real de las Huelgas in Burgos, Spain. Compiled between the late 13th and early 14th centuries, the original manuscript served as a repository for liturgical music, including unique polyphonic compositions that provide vital insight into the transition between ars antiqua and the early stages of the ars nova style. It remains one of the most significant sources of late medieval music preserved in the Iberian Peninsula.

This 1983 recording, released by the Spanish label Hispavox under catalog number HH 8, features a collaboration between the Coro de Monjas del Monasterio Cisterciense de Santa María la Real de las Huelgas and the early music ensemble Atrium Musicae de Madrid, directed by Gregorio Paniagua. The production sought to revive the atmospheric authenticity of the manuscript by blending academic rigor with the acoustic qualities of the monastery. Upon its release, the record was widely recognized for its contribution to the burgeoning movement of historically informed performance, earning praise for its specialized approach to Spanish medieval repertoire.
