Where it came from
Released by Hispavox in 1972, this recording documents the El Misterio de Elche, a medieval liturgical drama performed annually in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Elche, Spain. The work is recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, representing a rare survival of medieval musical theatre. This specific production sought to capture the complex, polyphonic soundscape of the Mystery Play, which combines elements of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.
The album production was spearheaded by musicologists and specialists dedicated to preserving Spanish cultural heritage, featuring performances that emphasize the authentic, centuries-old performance traditions of the local community. The cover art and accompanying documentation were designed to reflect the solemnity and historical gravity of the ritual. Upon its release, the recording was praised by critics for its academic rigor and its success in bringing a site-specific religious tradition to a wider international audience, providing a vital audio archive of the evolving composition.
