Provenance

Where it came from

This release, issued in 1970 by the East German state-owned label ETERNA, represents a specific effort to curate a collection of Beethoven's lesser-performed choral and orchestral works. The selection serves as a showcase for the label's commitment to the Austro-German classical canon during the Cold War era, utilizing the high production standards of the time to bring these varied pieces—ranging from the Choral Fantasy to the more obscure Op. 122 Bundeslied—to a wider domestic and international audience.

The album reflects the artistic priorities of the GDR's classical music infrastructure, often featuring ensembles like the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra or the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Leipzig. The cover design adheres to the functionalist, sober aesthetic characteristic of ETERNA’s catalog in the late 1960s and 70s, which prioritized legible typography and archival clarity. It remains a notable document for collectors of Eastern Bloc classical recordings, appreciated for both the historical performances and the distinct visual identity of the ETERNA label.
