Provenance

Where it came from

This ETERNA release, catalog number 8 26 002, was issued in 1977 as part of a significant effort by the East German state label to catalogue the complete works of Ludwig van Beethoven. The recording focuses on the composer's choral and orchestral music, featuring the Choral Fantasy in C minor alongside works such as Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt and the Opferlied. These pieces represent a distinct facet of Beethoven’s output, blending his mastery of symphonic structure with the dramatic, often humanistic power of vocal arrangements.

The album is representative of the high production standards maintained by ETERNA during this period, often utilizing the Dresden State Orchestra and the Leipzig Radio Choir to capture the expansive, celebratory nature of the music. The design reflects the austere yet elegant aesthetic common to Soviet-bloc classical records of the era, focusing on clear typography and formal presentation. It was well-received by international collectors of the time for its technical fidelity and the dedication of the performers to the German romantic canon, remaining a staple for those interested in the post-war recording history of the German Democratic Republic.
