Forellen-Quintett (Quintet In A Op. 114 »Trout« / Quintette En La Majeur Op. 114 »La Truite«)

Franz Schubert composed his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667, known as the Trout Quintet, in 1819 while staying in the Austrian Alps. The piece was commissioned by a wealthy music patron and amateur cellist, Sylvester Paumgartner, who requested that the work include variations on Schubert's own song, Die Forelle. It remains one of the most beloved examples of chamber music from the Romantic era, noted for its unusual instrumentation of piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass.

This particular recording, released on the Parnass label in 1978, features pianist Wolfgang Sawallisch alongside the Endres-Quartett. As a conductor and pianist, Sawallisch was widely respected for his interpretative clarity and dedication to the Germanic classical tradition. This release offered listeners a refined and balanced take on the quintet, consistent with the high technical standards expected of European chamber music recordings during the late 1970s.
