Released in 1959, the Play Bach project emerged from French pianist Jacques Loussier's desire to bridge the structural rigor of Baroque counterpoint with the spontaneous expression of jazz. Loussier, a classically trained musician, observed that the rhythmic vitality inherent in Johann Sebastian Bach's compositions provided an ideal architecture for swing-based improvisation. By stripping away the ornamentation typically applied to Bach's work, Loussier and his trio—bassist Pierre Michelot and drummer Christian Garros—reimagined these intellectual staples as contemporary, groove-oriented pieces.

The album was a breakthrough success for the Decca label, challenging the rigid aesthetic boundaries between classical music and jazz during the late 1950s. While some purists initially met the fusion with skepticism, the record's sophisticated arrangements and technical precision eventually earned it a permanent place in the crossover canon. The design often highlighted the intellectual gravitas of the source material, positioning the trio as serious musicians performing a respectful, albeit innovative, re-contextualization of European history.
