Where it came from
Released in September 1970, Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! captures the Rolling Stones during their landmark 1969 American tour. This live album was recorded primarily at Madison Square Garden in New York City, serving as a definitive document of the band's transition from their psychedelic era to the raw, blues-driven rock sound that defined their early seventies peak. It is widely considered one of the greatest live rock albums of all time, capturing the final performances of guitarist Mick Taylor during his inaugural tour with the group.
The album's iconic cover photography was captured by David Bailey, featuring Mick Jagger draped in a scarf and an oversized hat, standing beside a donkey adorned with a guitar. This imagery was heavily influenced by a lyric from the Bob Dylan song 'Visions of Johanna' and was intended to project a surreal, bohemian aesthetic that contrasted with the gritty intensity of the performance recordings. The release was met with critical acclaim upon arrival, praised for its unvarnished production and the tight, aggressive interplay between Keith Richards and Mick Taylor.
