Where it came from
Released in 1966 by Decca, this recording captures the liturgical chants for Palm Sunday as performed by the Monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. The abbey is world-renowned for its dedication to the preservation and authentic performance of Gregorian chant, a tradition the community has rigorously studied and refined since the mid-19th century.
The recording was directed by Dom Joseph Gajard, the long-standing choirmaster whose leadership was instrumental in establishing the Solesmes style as the gold standard for plainsong. His approach emphasized a fluid, rhythmic interpretation of the chant that sought to restore the nuances of medieval manuscripts. This release serves as an essential sonic document of the abbey's mid-century liturgical practice and their commitment to monastic musical heritage.
