Where it came from
The 1972 French production of the musical Godspell marked a significant cultural intersection of Broadway theater and the European music scene. This original cast recording, released on the Polydor label under catalog number 2056 135, captures the vibrant, folk-rock infused score that characterized the show's transition from an off-Broadway hit to an international phenomenon. Featuring vocals from Grégory Ken, the album was produced to mirror the accessible, communal spirit of the original American production while adapting the libretto for a French-speaking audience.
The musical design and vocal arrangements on this record aimed to retain the lighthearted, gospel-inspired pop aesthetic that defined Stephen Schwartz’s work. Grégory Ken’s performance was central to the recording, providing the energetic delivery required to anchor the French adaptation. At the time of its release, the recording was received as a faithful expansion of the show’s legacy, serving as both a memento for those who attended the performances in Paris and a standard representation of the work's global reach in the early 1970s.
