Where it came from
Golden Butter was released by Elektra Records in 1975 as a definitive retrospective of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Compiled after the band had disbanded, the double-album set was intended to consolidate their most influential recordings from their peak years in the mid-to-late 1960s, serving as an introduction to their role in bridging the gap between traditional Chicago blues and the burgeoning American rock scene.
The album features artwork and design typical of the mid-70s Elektra aesthetic, emphasizing the band's critical stature as pioneers of blues-rock integration. The selection of tracks highlights the group's technical prowess, particularly the interplay between Paul Butterfield’s harmonica and the dual-guitar attack of Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop. It was received by critics as a necessary historical document, cementing the ensemble's reputation for bringing electric blues to a wider counterculture audience.
