Where it came from
Released under the Studio S.M. label, this recording captures the liturgical traditions of the Abbaye d'En-Calcat and the Abbaye de Ligugé. These Benedictine monasteries have long been pillars of French monastic life, dedicated to the preservation of Gregorian chant as a vital component of the divine office. The release was part of a mid-twentieth-century initiative by Studio S.M. to document and disseminate the authentic, unadorned vocal traditions of the French Catholic Church to a broader audience during a period of significant liturgical transition.
The production sought to capture the resonant, meditative quality of the plainsong in its natural acoustic environment. By recording the choirs in their respective abbey churches, the production team aimed to transport the listener into the contemplative atmosphere of the monastic space. Upon release, the album was received as an essential archival record, valued by both religious institutions and secular music enthusiasts for its technical clarity and the scholarly devotion applied to the preservation of the Latin chant repertory.
