Hard-Hearted Woman / Back Home To Mama

Hard-Hearted Woman / Back Home To Mama was released in 1954 on the States Record Company label, an imprint established by Leonard Allen in Chicago. This single reflects the quintessential post-war Chicago blues sound, a period defined by the transition from acoustic delta roots to the amplified, ensemble-driven style that came to define the city's musical identity. Big Walter Horton, a virtuoso harmonica player, led his combo for this recording, showcasing the expressive, fluid style that would later earn him widespread acclaim as one of the most influential blues harpists of the era.

The production captures the raw, kinetic energy of the mid-1950s independent blues circuit. Designed to appeal to a growing urban audience, the record relies on the tight, driving interplay between the harmonica and the rhythm section, a hallmark of the States and United label roster. While the specific production personnel remain somewhat obscured by the informal nature of these studio sessions, the release stands as a vital piece of the Chicago blues canon, representing the foundational work that paved the way for the blues revival of the following decades.
