Where it came from
Released in 1954 on the Chicago-based States Record Company label, this single features the harmonica-led blues style of Walter 'Big Walter' Horton. States Records was a subsidiary of the United label, founded by Leonard Allen, which played a significant role in documenting the post-war Chicago blues scene. This specific release captures a period when Horton was moving between various recording sessions, showcasing his signature technical prowess on the harmonica alongside his ensemble.
The production reflects the gritty, amplified sound that defined the South Side of Chicago during the 1950s. Like many releases from the States catalog, the record was intended for the jukebox and regional radio market, capturing the raw energy of the club circuit. While Horton is celebrated as a pivotal figure in the development of the Chicago blues harmonica sound, these early 78s and 45s remain significant documents of the era's collaborative studio practices, where session players often defined the instrumental textures of the genre.
