Where it came from
High Energy Weekend was released in 1980 by the Irish hard rock band Mama's Boys on the independent label Pussy Records. Formed by the three McManus brothers—Pat, John, and Tommy—the band originated in County Fermanagh. This early release helped establish their reputation within the energetic pub rock and heavy metal circuits of the time, serving as a foundational piece of their discography before they gained broader international recognition.
The record reflects the raw, guitar-driven aesthetic that defined the band's early career. With Pat McManus on lead guitar and the brothers collaborating on songwriting, the production emphasizes the high-octane performance style they were known for in live venues. While the Pussy Records label was a small-scale venture, this single captured the earnest, working-class rock sensibility that would eventually lead the group to tour extensively across Europe and perform at major festivals like Reading.
