Highlights From La Boheme / Carmen-Suite

Released in the early 1950s by Plymouth Records, this 12-inch long-playing record was part of a mid-century effort to make classical opera accessible to a broader American audience. Plymouth was a budget-friendly subsidiary label known for reissuing orchestral performances and abridged operatic highlights at a lower price point than the major labels of the era, catering to the growing market of home hi-fi enthusiasts who were building their personal collections during the post-war record boom.

The disc features selections from Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème and Georges Bizet’s Carmen, performed by the Vienna Opera Company. The presentation reflects the standard commercial aesthetic of the time, utilizing minimalist jacket art and a focus on the popularity of the compositions themselves rather than star-power billing. These budget recordings were generally regarded as functional and pedagogical tools for classical music appreciation, designed to introduce casual listeners to the most famous melodies of the European opera repertoire.
