I Will Marry You Oh! Lover / Gbo Olorun Oba Ogo /

Released on the Philips label in the mid-1960s, this recording captures the unique sound of Chief S. I. Atolagbe and His Holy Rainbow Band, a prominent ensemble within the Nigerian highlife and juju music scene. The era was defined by a cross-pollination of traditional Yoruba rhythms and contemporary instrumentation, as artists began to fuse local liturgical or folk influences with the popular dancehall styles of the time.

The record label Philips played a critical role in documenting the burgeoning Nigerian recording industry during this period, often capturing local bandleaders whose influence helped shape the sound of modern West African music. Atolagbe’s work is characterized by its rhythmic depth and the cultural synthesis typical of the era, reflecting the band’s role in both communal gatherings and the broader musical landscape of Nigeria before the shifts in industry production that followed the late 1960s.
