Ich Schau Den Weißen Wolken Nach / Einmal Weht Der Südwind Wieder

Released in 1962 on the Fontana label, this single features Nana Mouskouri at the onset of her transition toward international stardom. The A-side, 'Ich schau den weißen Wolken nach,' was a German-language adaptation of a song originally titled 'The White Rose of Athens,' which Mouskouri had popularized globally. The track was arranged by the influential German bandleader Erwin Lehn, whose work often defined the sophisticated, orchestral pop sound synonymous with European television variety shows of the early sixties.

The production captures the mid-century schlager aesthetic, characterized by lush string arrangements and Mouskouri’s signature breathy, precise vocal delivery. By choosing to record these tracks in German, Mouskouri was strategically expanding her reach within the DACH region, a market that proved essential to her long-term success. While the record functioned as a standard promotional tool for her burgeoning career, it has since become a sought-after piece for collectors documenting the evolution of European popular music during the pre-Beatles era.
