Where it came from
Released in 1966 by The Record Society, this collection highlights key vocal works by Claudio Monteverdi, specifically those showcasing his mastery of the seconda pratica. The record features the Società Cameristica di Lugano under the direction of Edwin Loehrer, a group that earned distinction during the mid-20th century for their commitment to historically informed performance long before the practice became mainstream. Their approach aimed to strip away the heavy, romanticized orchestrations common in earlier decades, favoring a leaner, more dramatic texture that aligned with Monteverdi’s original intent.
The Record Society, an imprint associated with the World Record Club, was known for producing high-quality, often scholarly selections for a niche audience of audiophiles and classical music enthusiasts. By coupling major works like 'Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda' with shorter madrigals, the album was designed as a thematic exploration of baroque affect and musical rhetoric. The critical reception at the time lauded Loehrer's ability to balance the technical rigor of the score with the expressive, often volatile emotional shifts inherent in Monteverdi's dramatic writing.
