Where it came from
The BBC Transcription Service operated as a specialized branch of the BBC designed to distribute high-quality recordings to radio stations worldwide. During the 1970s, the In Concert series served as a primary vehicle for sharing contemporary British musical performances with international broadcasters, bypassing commercial constraints through a subscription-based model. This particular installment, cataloged as CN 1541/S, was produced in 1973 to provide stations with a festive, varied program suitable for seasonal programming.
The recording pairs the sophisticated, jazz-inflected vocals of Cleo Laine and the refined instrumentation of The John Dankworth Quartet with the lighthearted, nostalgic aesthetic of Norrie Paramor and The Big Ben Banjo Band. This juxtaposition highlights the breadth of British broadcasting at the time, bridging the gap between avant-garde jazz traditions and the populist, sing-along appeal of the Banjo Band. The collection was aimed at radio programmers seeking a polished, professional sound that could comfortably fill an hour of airtime during the holiday season.
