Where it came from
Released in 1959 on the French label Résonances, this collection is part of a monumental project to record the complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach. The recording features Jean-Jacques Grünenwald, a renowned French organist, composer, and titular organist at Saint-Sulpice in Paris, performing on the Clicquot organ at Souvigny. This specific set—volumes V through VIII—reflects the mid-century European focus on reviving historical instruments and authentic performance practices within the context of the French organ school.
Grünenwald’s interpretation was noted for its technical precision and his deep familiarity with the liturgical and structural demands of Bach’s organ compositions. As a performer who balanced the rigorous tradition of the conservatory with the nuanced requirements of his position at Saint-Sulpice, Grünenwald sought to bring a clarity to these recordings that contrasted with the more romanticized Bach interpretations of the early 20th century. The release remains a significant historical document of post-war European classical recordings, capturing both the specific acoustic signature of the Souvigny instrument and the rigorous methodology of its era.
