Where it came from
Released in 1983 by CBC Records, this recording features the National Arts Centre Orchestra under the direction of Franco Mannino. The album serves as a curated collection of classic Italian operatic overtures, showcasing works by masters such as Rossini, Verdi, Donizetti, and Bellini. The project was produced as part of the CBC's commitment to documenting the high caliber of Canadian orchestral talent during the late twentieth century.
The album's design and selection reflect a focused effort to bring standard operatic repertoire to a wider audience through the lens of a regional, yet nationally significant, ensemble. By including pieces like Wolf-Ferrari’s work alongside the more traditional canon, the selection highlights the versatility of the orchestra. It remains a representative example of 1980s Canadian classical discography, capturing the technical precision and interpretive style characteristic of Mannino's tenure with the National Arts Centre Orchestra.
