Where it came from
Released in 2015 via Season of Mist, IX - Everyone, Everything, Everywhere, Ends represents the fourth studio album by the Norwegian band Shining. The record marked a significant evolution for the group, solidifying their signature 'blackjazz' sound, which meticulously blends elements of progressive metal, free jazz, and industrial music. It was conceived as a visceral exploration of entropy and existential finality, themes that deeply informed the abrasive, high-energy compositions found throughout the tracklist.
The album's visual identity and sonic direction were driven by frontman Jørgen Munkeby, who sought to push the technical boundaries of the band's previous work by incorporating more aggressive saxophone arrangements and polyrhythmic structures. Upon its release, the album was generally well-received by critics who praised its ambitious genre-defying approach and Munkeby's technical prowess, further establishing Shining as a singular force within the contemporary experimental metal scene.
