J. S. Bach Sonates & Partitas pour violon seul

Released in 1982 on the Harmonia Mundi label, this recording of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin features the French violinist Régis Pasquier. The collection was produced during a period when Harmonia Mundi was establishing a reputation for high-fidelity classical recordings that prioritized acoustic clarity and historical sensitivity. Pasquier, known for his technical precision and lyrical approach, aimed to capture the polyphonic complexity of Bach’s writing while maintaining the structural integrity required of these foundational solo works.

The album was released as a three-LP set, bearing the catalog number 1085/87, and was recorded in the distinct, resonant acoustic environment characteristic of Harmonia Mundi’s studio sessions of the era. The design of the packaging reflects the label's minimalist and scholarly aesthetic, which focused on providing the listener with clear documentation and a sober presentation that emphasized the seriousness of the music. Upon its release, the set was noted by critics for Pasquier’s restrained yet nuanced phrasing, solidifying his standing as a prominent interpreter of Baroque repertoire in the early 1980s.
