Where it came from
Released in 1978 on the La Voix de Son Maître label, this recording showcases the Bulgarian-French pianist Alexis Weissenberg performing some of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most celebrated transcriptions for solo piano. The album takes its title from the famous chorale 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring,' reflecting a period in Weissenberg's career where he sought to bring a more rigorous, structural clarity to the Romantic-leaning interpretation of Bach's keyboard works.
The album features arrangements that highlight Weissenberg's technical precision and his distinct, percussive approach to the instrument. As a product of the late 1970s classical recording scene in France, the release was part of a broader effort to document the extensive transcriptions of Bach's organ and orchestral music for the modern concert grand. Critics of the time noted the recording for its intellectual intensity, which remains a hallmark of Weissenberg’s legacy in the piano repertoire.
