Where it came from
Released in 1985 by La Voix de Son Maître, this record features pianist Alexis Weissenberg performing a selection of Bach's choral preludes and keyboard transcriptions. The album centers on 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring,' reflecting the mid-20th-century trend of presenting Baroque masterworks in a highly refined, virtuosic piano format. Weissenberg was known for his crystalline articulation and rigorous approach to the keyboard, a style that brought a distinct modern clarity to these centuries-old liturgical compositions.
The album serves as a testament to Weissenberg's long-standing dedication to Bach, a composer he performed throughout his international career. By this stage in his life, Weissenberg had moved away from his earlier, more volatile interpretations to embrace a meticulous, structural integrity. The selection was aimed at listeners seeking a meditative, disciplined experience of classical piano, and it remains a respected example of the French label's commitment to high-fidelity solo recordings during the 1980s.
