Where it came from
Released in 1965 on the Philips label, this live recording captures Johnny Lion, the stage name of Dutch singer Jan van der Meijden, performing at the popular Dutch radio show Jamboree. During the mid-1960s, Lion was a prominent figure in the Dutch beat music scene, frequently collaborating with his backing group, The Jumping Jewels. The record serves as a sonic document of the era's live performance culture, where radio broadcasts often provided a vital platform for artists to showcase their energetic stage presence to a wider national audience.
The album reflects the stylistic blend of rock and roll and beat music that defined Lion's career during this period. The Jumping Jewels were well-regarded instrumentalists, and their involvement brought a polished, guitar-driven sound to the production. The collaboration between the charismatic frontman and the established backing band was aimed at capturing the youthful exuberance of the Jamboree concerts, and while the album remains a niche artifact of the Dutch pop history, it is valued by collectors for its raw, unfiltered glimpse into the live musical landscape of 1965 Netherlands.
