Where it came from
Released in 1977 on the East German ETERNA label, this recording serves as a significant document of the Thomanerchor tradition in Leipzig. The record pairs two of J.S. Bach's major Easter cantatas, BWV 31 and BWV 66, representing a period where the Gewandhausorchester and the Thomanerchor aimed to preserve the authentic interpretive heritage of Bach's music within the context of the German Democratic Republic's state-supported classical music infrastructure.
The performance is led by Hans-Joachim Rotzsch, who served as the Thomaskantor from 1972 to 1991. The design of this ETERNA pressing follows the label's standard aesthetic of the era, focusing on academic clarity and archival presentation to highlight the historical importance of the performances. These recordings are recognized by scholars and enthusiasts for their adherence to traditional German baroque performance practices that persisted in Leipzig despite the shifting trends of the historically informed performance movement gaining traction elsewhere in the 1970s.
