Klavierduo Bauer-Bung - Joh.Chr.Bach-Busoni-Chopin-Milhaud-Paulene

Released in 1979 by the German label Thorofon, this recording features the Klavierduo Bauer-Bung, a partnership between pianists Kurt Bauer and Heidi Bung. The album serves as a curated showcase of works for piano four-hands, bridging a stylistic gap between the Baroque sensibilities of Johann Christian Bach, the Romanticism of Chopin, and the 20th-century neoclassicism of Francis Poulenc and Darius Milhaud. It reflects the duo's commitment to chamber music repertoire during a period when specialty classical labels were instrumental in documenting nuanced interpretations of less-frequently performed piano arrangements.

The album is representative of Thorofon’s catalog, which frequently focused on high-fidelity chamber recordings intended for an appreciative, academic-leaning audience. The production emphasizes the technical precision and synchronicity required for four-hand playing, a disciplined art form that the Bauer-Bung duo cultivated throughout their collaborative career. The selection of repertoire, particularly the inclusion of Busoni’s editorial influence and the varied tonal languages of Milhaud and Poulenc, illustrates an intent to highlight the versatility of the piano duet medium across different centuries.
