This recording was released by Deutsche Grammophon in the early 1970s, capturing Soviet virtuoso Emil Gilels performing a selection of Mozart's piano works. The album features a blend of sonatas and the well-known Fantasia in D Minor, showcasing Gilels' refined approach to the Classical repertoire during the height of his international career. Deutsche Grammophon’s production during this era was characterized by a commitment to high-fidelity audio engineering, aiming to capture the depth and nuance of the instrument in a controlled studio environment.

The design of the sleeve follows the minimalist, academic aesthetic typical of Deutsche Grammophon's classical releases of the time, emphasizing clarity and information over decorative flourish. These sessions were part of a broader commitment by major labels to document the most celebrated interpreters of the mid-20th century, and the release was received by critics as a testament to Gilels' technical precision and his ability to navigate the emotional complexities of Mozart's mid-to-late period compositions.
