Where it came from
Released in 1979 on the French label Arion, this recording of La Nativité features the Chorale Concinite de Louvain under the direction of Karel Aerts. The album was produced during a period when the Arion label, founded by Ariane Sègal, was dedicated to bringing rare and scholarly interpretations of early music and liturgical compositions to a wider international audience, often emphasizing authentic choral performance styles.
The recording explores the intersection of Gregorian chant and polyphonic compositions related to the Nativity. The Chorale Concinite, based in Leuven, Belgium, was widely recognized for its technical precision and its commitment to the nuance of liturgical vocal traditions. By juxtaposing singular melodic lines with Renaissance polyphony, Aerts sought to illustrate the historical evolution of sacred music, a stylistic approach that was well-received by European music critics and listeners interested in the meditative qualities of period-specific repertoire.
