Les Six Sonates Pour Violon Seul, Op. 27

Eugène Ysaÿe composed these six sonatas in 1923 after hearing Joseph Szigeti perform J.S. Bach’s solo violin works. Driven by the desire to modernize violin technique while honoring the legacy of his predecessor, Ysaÿe utilized the unique musical personalities of six contemporary virtuosos to define the character of each movement. The result remains a cornerstone of the violin repertoire, demanding immense technical prowess and serving as a bridge between Romantic traditions and twentieth-century innovation.

This recording features the French violinist Régis Pasquier, released under the Arion label in the 1970s. Pasquier, known for his refined technique and deep connection to the French school of violin playing, offers an interpretation that emphasizes the lyrical intensity and structural integrity of the scores. Arion’s production was well-received by critics for capturing the intimate, challenging nature of these solo works with clarity, reinforcing Pasquier's reputation as a thoughtful interpreter of the violin canon.
