Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1970 on the Philips label, this album captures the unique brand of absurdist humor and musical cabaret that defined Insterburg & Co. during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The group, led by Ingo Insterburg, emerged from the West Berlin creative scene, blending satirical lyrics, non-sequiturs, and folk-inspired instrumentation to critique and parody contemporary West German life.

The album reflects the group's signature aesthetic of intentional amateurism and chaotic charm, a style that prioritized spontaneous wit over technical polish. While they were never considered a mainstream pop act, their work became a cult touchstone for German counterculture audiences. The title itself, referencing 'store-shelf warmers,' highlights the self-deprecating humor that Insterburg & Co. utilized to position themselves outside the traditional industry hierarchies of the era.
