Where it came from
Le Double Disque D'Or De Django Reinhardt was released by the French label Vogue in 1976 as part of a series intended to consolidate the massive legacy of the jazz guitarist. By the mid-1970s, Reinhardt's work had undergone a significant critical reappraisal, and this compilation served as a comprehensive introduction for a new generation of listeners, presenting his virtuosic acoustic improvisations within the context of a wider European jazz revival.
The design of the double album reflected the aesthetic of European jazz archival releases from the era, focusing on iconic, brooding portraiture of Reinhardt to evoke his singular persona. The compilation aimed to capture the breadth of his career, spanning his early quintet recordings through his later experiments with electric guitar, and it was received as a definitive anthology that helped cement his status as the most influential figure in Gypsy jazz.
